Understanding Your Rights Under the NYC Human Rights Law (NYCHRL)
Daniel Kovel

The New York City Human Rights Law (NYCHRL) is one of the strongest civil rights laws in the country — far more protective than federal or even state law. If you work in NYC, you’re covered by a powerful set of rights designed to keep your workplace fair, safe, and free from discrimination.

What Makes the NYCHRL So Strong?

The NYCHRL protects employees, freelancers, contractors, and job applicants from discrimination based on more than 25 protected characteristics. These include:

  • Race and ethnicity
  • Gender and gender identity
  • Sexual orientation
  • Age
  • Disability
  • Pregnancy and lactation
  • Immigration status
  • Caregiver status
  • Marital status
  • Religion
  • Veteran status
  • And many more

Compared to federal law, the NYCHRL casts a much wider net. It requires employers to take even minor discriminatory conduct seriously — and it’s intentionally written to be interpreted liberally in favor of workers.

Where Do These Protections Apply?

The NYCHRL applies to nearly every aspect of employment, including:

  • Hiring and promotions
  • Pay and compensation
  • Workplace harassment and hostile work environment claims
  • Reasonable accommodations for disability, pregnancy, religion, and more
  • Job duties, scheduling, and workplace policies
  • Termination, layoffs, and constructive discharge

It also explicitly protects you from retaliation — meaning your employer cannot punish you for reporting discrimination, requesting accommodations, or asserting your rights.

If You’ve Been Mistreated at Work, You’re Not Alone
